As we get older, our bodies tend to stop working the way they used to. Erectile dysfunction is a common issue among older men and can start taking a toll on mental health. For more than 20 years, Dr. Promila Banerjee has been helping men and women in Illinois meet their ultimate aesthetic and wellness goals. At Halo Laser & Aesthetic Medicine, we are happy to offer treatments for erectile dysfunction to residents of Chicago, Schaumburg, Evanston, Northbrook and the neighboring communities of Illinois.
What is Erectile Dysfunction (ED)?
Erectile dysfunction (ED), or impotence, is the inability to obtain or maintain an erection suitable for intimate activity. More than 35 million men in the United States are affected by it. While more than half of men aged 65 and older and nearly all men over the age of 70 experience ED, it also affects up to 39 percent of men in their 40s.
Left untreated, the physical frustrations of living with erectile dysfunction can quickly become emotionally stressful as well, with men often reporting relationship and related issues. The result can be embarrassment and loss of self-esteem, which often affects personal relationships.
PRP Treatment for Erectile Dysfunction
At Halo Medicine, we can treat erectile dysfunction by using platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy. The PRP procedure, also called the PRP Shot or Magic Shot, is non-invasive and doesn't carry the heart-health risks that many traditional erectile dysfunction treatments do.
This is because PRP therapy uses natural, regenerative cells that are drawn from your bloodstream. These cells are refined to just the platelet rich plasma (PRP) using a highly-advanced centrifuge. They are then administered directly to the penis and delivers erections that are:
- Firmer
- Larger
- More frequent
- Longer lasting
This is because PRP promotes the growth of new tissue that can help you have better erections for up to 18 months or longer.
What is PRP?
PRP is a part of a category of medicine called Regenerative Medicine. In simple terms, the process involves taking a small amount of your blood, concentrating your blood’s platelets, and then injecting the resulting platelet-rich plasma into an area of your body in need of regeneration.
At Halo, we also use PRP therapy to:
- Perform non-invasive face lifts and breast lifts.
- Spur hair regrowth.
- Reduce or eliminate urinary incontinence.
- Boost sexual function for woman and men.

Who Has Used PRP Therapy?
PRP treatment has gained widespread recognition in the sports with athletes like Tiger woods being treated several times following knee surgery, and Troy Polamalu of the Pittsburgh Steelers received PRP therapy prior to winning Super Bowl XLIII.
It’s been the talk of the town in Hollywood with many high-profile actors and actresses successfully undergoing PRP cosmetic treatments.
What is the History of PRP?
PRP is Platelet-Rich Plasma therapy. Although an emerging technology and technique in sports medicine, it has been used since the mid-1990’s in dental, orthopedics, sports medicine, oral surgery to aid in soft tissue recovery following plastic surgery.
PRP has evolved and now being successfully being used as a “NATURAL” holistic alternative to cosmetic facial injections, facial fillers (Liquid face lift), for hair restoration, breast lift, treatment for incontinence, erectile dysfunction and much more.
How is PRP Administered?
PRP therapy, which takes about 20 minutes to administer, begins with collection of 30-60 milliliters of the patient’s blood depending on the procedure. The sample blood is then separated by spinning it in a centrifuge for up to 30 minutes. This process results in the platelet-rich plasma, which is rich in growth factors.
Platelets function as a natural reservoir for growth factors that are essential to repair injured tissues. The growth factors that the platelets secrete stimulate tissue recovery by increasing collagen production, enhancing tendon stem cell proliferation, and tenocyte-related gene and protein expression. These growth factors also stimulate blood flow and cause cartilage to become more firm and resilient. PRP activates tenocytes to proliferate quickly and produce collagen to repair injured tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and muscles.
Does the PRP Treatment Hurt?
The majority of PRP treatments are done with topical numbing for an hour and you will not feel anything. We numb the treatment area and in some cases do a nerve block to minimize the discomfort / sensation experienced by some. Average feelings last no more than 3 (three) minutes.
How Long Does PRP Treatment Last?
Although results vary by client, most PRP procedures last anywhere from 18 months to 3 years.
What Are the Side Effects?
Typically, there are no side effects because the procedure is done with your own blood/plasma. The worst we’ve seen and heard reports of is that the first treatment may not be very effective for a small number of patients.
However, because needles are used to do the injections, there is a possibility of bruising.
We always advise reviewing your medications with the Halo Team and stopping all supplements, including fish oils, 1 week prior to any PRP treatment.
Can I Do More than 1 Treatment Within a Year?
Yes, PRP can be done any time in an untreated area. For areas that have been treated, remember that results are not immediate. We advise our clients to wait 3-6 months before assessing results.
